Wearing a lot of different hats! Our sport has become very sophisticated and it is essential to be well versed in all aspects of the industry. It is important to be an educated horseman or woman and be able to manage and deal with not just the riding aspect but the management of the horses and how best to develop each horse to his best potential. A “good eye” for a horse so that the right horse/rider combination is found for your students that fits their riding ability, is suitable for the division they ride in and is within budget.
A good business sense is necessary to understand the costs involved and the overhead you will carry. It is essential to build a strong support team around you that each play a key role which includes loyal, experienced staff, blacksmith, vet, mentors and be able to articulate any changes in your horses behavior or health so that potential problems can be identified early.
Nowadays it is important to be pro-active in encouraging people to be involved and help you whether that is developing relationships with potential sponsors or investors or mentors, friends and family who can help you achieve your goals. Building as many positive relationships as you can and staying current in the sport is vital. It takes a village!
